Height Weight Chart – Growth of 2 to 3 Years

At some stage in the third year of life babies tend to gain about 4 pounds or 1-800 grams in weight and grow about 2-3 inches (5 to 8 centimeters) in height. Your baby’s appetite can change a lot at this time. It is very common. If your child is active happy and busy and you provide plenty of nutritious foods, he or she probably needed nutrients and there is probably no cause for concern.

Although children come in all shapes and sizes, a healthy child should continue to grow at a regular pace. The doctor will measure and weigh your child at regular check-ups and prepare the results on growth charts. This helps ensure a consistent pattern of your child’s growth and tracks whether his size is in a healthy range compared to other children of the same age and gender.

How can I help my child grow normally?

Normal growth supported by good nutrition adequate sleep and regular exercise is one of the best indicators of your child’s complete well-being. Be aware, however, that your child’s growth pattern is largely determined by genetics. Malnutrition severe enough to affect the child’s growth rate is unusual today in the United States and other developed countries unless the child is associated with a chronic disease or disorder. Making a child with “short genes” eat extra food, greater than the recommended amount of vitamins, minerals or other nutrients will not increase his or her height.

In the doctor’s office

Despite data collected for growth charts, “normal” heights and weights are difficult to define. Shorter parents for example tend to have shorter children while taller parents tend to have taller children. Although you may be concerned if your child is not as tall as his peers or weighs more, a more important question is whether your child continues to grow at a normal rate. If your child’s doctor suspects a problem such as a growth rate that was normal but has recently slowed, he or she may carefully track your child’s measurements over several months to determine if the growth pattern suggests a possible health problem or is just a change from normal.

Most children who grow on or below the 5th percentile line on the growth chart usually follow one of two different patterns of normal growth as follows:

If families have short height, those children have inherited genes for short height from their parents. Usually one or both parents are often other relatives short. Although they are shorter than average, these children are growing at a normal rate and are otherwise healthy and show no signs of medical problems that can affect growth. They generally go through puberty in middle age and reach the final adult height similar to that of their parents. In general, no treatment of these children is recommended or known to be effective in significantly increasing their final adult height.

Although they are usually of average size in early childhood, these children are the period of slower than average growth between 6 months and 2 years causing them to fall to the 5th percentile or lower on the growth charts? After about age 2 or 3, children with constitutional growth retardation will grow at a normal rate from childhood until they reach puberty and are subject to growth spurts at a later age than most other teenagers. As they begin puberty later they continue to grow after the majority of teenagers have stopped so “outgrowing” their peers in final adult height. There is usually a history of this type of growth pattern and generally no form of processing is required.

If your child’s doctor finds that your child is growing too slowly, tests may be ordered to determine if it was due to a medical or genetic condition that would cause stunting. Be sure to discuss any problems you have with your child’s growth or development with your child’s doctor.
