Have Fun with White Elephant Gifts and Save
Gift giving is an expensive business, but there are many wonderful ways to create beautiful gifts from just a few dollars. White elephant gifts are perfect to suit almost any person and largely what you do with the purchased item can determine its appeal.
First, you’ll want to visit any traditional white elephant spots like yard sales, thrift and antique shops, and bric-a-brac shops. This is a perfect time of year to shop for pre-loved items. Many people get rid of their unwanted items to make some extra money for Christmas or to make room for the incoming goodies the festive season will bring.
Remember a few golden rules: look for clean, undamaged items, preferably with available packaging. Check documentation where applicable, such as instructions or certificate of authenticity. Getting some history from the seller can bring a point of interest when written and given with the item.
Here are some key pieces to look for:
Anything collectible
Many people collect things and I’m sure you know someone who does. Figurines, plates, linens, vases and much more can offer an instant gift to add to a collection. For example, a photo album with a horse on the front cover would be an ideal gift for the horse lover. Don’t look past the older stuff that you might casually look at under normal circumstances. Old keys, vintage garden equipment, and unusual old cans, and vinyl records – you do remember those, don’t you? – are quite collectible.
Decorative objects
Old, clean bottles of various colors and sizes to complement a friend’s color scheme in their kitchen make a wonderful display. Buy a tube or two of glass paint in basic colors and draw a design on a bottle of suitable size and shape for use as a vase. The personal practical touch makes an inexpensive, but charming and useful gift.
Old pots (enamel works well) make interesting gifts. I especially like to fill old tin pots with potting mix and add plants in textures and colors to complete the pot.
Changeable materials
Lace curtains are perfect as tablecloths, tablecloths or covers for food when cut to size and hemmed. Old curtains make great pillows or sew into simple, durable tote bags for days at the beach.
Things with an interesting shape and form
Many objects can be ugly when placed on a mantelpiece or table, but take on new life when placed in the garden among the softness of shrubbery. Large vases and urns are great, but there are many other options. All it requires is an eye for shape and how it would look in a recipient’s garden, plus an assessment of its weatherproof qualities. In some cases, weathering is desirable to add further interest, e.g. a rusting pot can be much more attractive in texture and color than a shiny one.
Items to build into a set
Often small consumable items are available at yard sales, but often not in sufficient quantities to do anything, and certainly not enough to give as a gift. However, if you look for these items at several sales, you can soon build up a convenient size. Package it in an interesting gift and there is your gift. For this reason, it does not matter if items are partially used. Here are some ideas:
Sewer Paradise cotton, pins, needles, tape measures, ribbons, ties, lengths of material, and neat patterns (preferably unused for these).
Knitter’s Kit: knitting needles – especially specialty needles, any mix of wool balls, elastic, wool needles, patterns, knitting books and travel bag.
Crafter’s Dream: any variety of wool, ribbon, sequins, fabric, card, colored and plain papers, craft books, glitter, patterns, rubber stamps and more.
Bathroom Bliss: unopened and unused beautiful soaps, bubble bath, shampoo, bath salts, body brush, beautiful jar to fill with cotton balls, manicure set, towels, face towels, perfume, facial mask treatments. Look for sample size versions as well as their full size counterparts.
Handyman’s Tool box: this is a good idea for a young male who requires a basic tool, or for an old tool enthusiast. Look for any kind of wrenches, screwdrivers, nails, screws, hammer, tape measure, wrench, pliers and wire cutters. Be careful – a sturdy bag or box is required for packing as the combined weight will be quite strong.
You may never look at a white elephant sale the same way again. Objects have great potential when considered creatively, and it is much better for the environment that these items do not go to landfill, but find a useful life in someone else’s hands.
