End of Summer Celebration!

Summer vacation is almost over. “Back to school” signs are hastily posted in stores, and frantic kids race to finish their summer homework, which has so far been gathering dust. The atmosphere in most homes is somber, with a cloud of doom hanging over it. Air. But wait a minute! There are still a few weeks left of summer. Take your time and celebrate the end of summer with your kids!

There are so many super fun ways to end your summer!

Here are some:

Slammin’ Pajama Party-

Plan a themed pajama party for your kids and their group of friends, like Sleep Under the Stars. There’s no better way to end the summer than with parties that last all night!

Create invitations from black paper cut into a large star shape. Paint the stars with a thin coat of glue and sprinkle glitter on each star. Write party details on back in silver ink. Have each child bring a sleeping bag and a favorite stuffed animal.

Set up a couple of tents (can be bought for cheap from local label sales or discount stores). Hang a few lanterns in your backyard and you can spend a night under the stars! Serve the kids with hot dogs and burgers as entrees. For dessert, make some S’mores in the microwave!

To make 1 dozen S’mores:

24 graham crackers

6 regular chocolate bars

12 large marshmallows

method:

On 2 large microwave-safe plates, place 6 graham crackers per plate. Divide all 6 chocolate bars in half and place 1 on each graham cracker. Place 1 marshmallow on top of each cookie, then top each cookie with another graham cracker to complete the “sandwich.”

Place in the microwave on high power for 20 seconds, until the marshmallows have puffed up.

Finish the night by having all the kids lie side by side on the grass and take turns sharing their fondest summer memories. Send everyone back to their tents so you can enjoy what remains of the glistening summer sky!

summer time box

A great way to keep your summer memories alive is by making a Summer Memories box. You can buy ready-made wooden boxes at your local craft or hobby store. Let your kids collect sand and shells the next time they go to the beach.

To decorate the box, coat it with a coat of clear varnish, then let your child sprinkle sand and silver glitter on top. Let it dry. Once dry, have your child spell their name on the box with the shells. Use the glue gun to secure the case, but be careful not to get your child’s fingers in the way first!

Fill the box with all the treasures you’ve collected over the summer, like the perfect rock your daughter found or the movie stub your son just watched.

Whenever your child is feeling school-stressed or feeling down, take out the box. Remember summer is sure to bring a smile to anyone!

Summer…all year round!

Just because summer is only 3 short months doesn’t mean you can’t rejoice in this season year-round. Change the decor in your home to reflect the summer feel. Instead of dark and dull colours, brighten up your windows and furniture with soft and sheer fabrics.

Instead of investing in expensive artwork to put on your mantel, turn to nature to decorate your home. Large pieces of coral or colorful seashells are an inexpensive and creative way to keep the summer theme in your home.

Be creative and think outside the box! Remember that old, battered surfboard in the attic? Fish it out and refurbish it. Hang it in a prominent place in your home for a great talking point. If you don’t have a surfboard, maybe you can add some surfboard theme to your home. Maybe put a few surfboard themed pillows or some surfboard soap in your bathroom. Keep the waves moving all year round!

Goodbye summer “bon voyage” picnics –

Alas, Xia Tian will leave without regret. Say goodbye to the season in style with a summer picnic on the beach. Nothing fancy, just a bag of cold cut sandwiches and some sliced watermelon from home.

Make it special by surprising your child with several empty corked bottles. Get out some decorative paper and pens. Have your child write a “message in a bottle” letter with their name and email address. Roll up each letter and insert into the bottle. Secure the cork tightly to ensure that the bottle can float and water cannot enter. Let your kids throw the bottle far out to sea.

You never know, these bottles could be at sea all winter and be discovered in time for next summer. Hoping for another kid looking for a summer fun pen pal in a faraway land!

As you bid farewell to the last breath of summer, remember that it will return again next year, with sunny days and starry nights. Keep it in your mind and it will come back before you know it!
