The Daniel Fast is Good For Your Health!
The Daniel Fast is not only a powerful spiritual experience, but the Daniel Fast meal plan is also great for health. During this partial fast, many foods are restricted, including any food containing chemicals or artificial preservatives. Therefore, all artificial foods and preservatives are removed from the diet for the fasting period, which is usually between 10 and 21 days.
I get many reports of improved health from men and women after they have fasted. Many decide to eliminate chemicals and preservatives as a change in their daily lifestyle. That’s why a new study on the effects of artificial coloring and preservatives in children’s diets caught my attention.
The recent study was funded by the British Food Standards Agency and reported what many of us have suspected for a long time: artificial foods and preservatives can make children hyperactive.
Published in the esteemed medical journal The Lancetthe study is a success because it confirmed the effect of artificial food additives on children in general and not only those diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which the earlier studies indicated.
The study was led by Jim Stevenson, professor of psychology at the University of Southampton along with a team of researchers who followed a particularly rigorous, double-blind procedure. About 300 children, half 3-year-olds and half 8- and 9-year-olds, were given either one of two “trial” drinks or a placebo over a six-week period. The levels of artificial colors and preservatives in the test drinks were based on the current average daily consumption of food additives by British children. The children’s parents, teachers and an independent group of observers assessed the children’s behavior for behaviors such as disruption, restlessness and changing activities.
The study’s authors concluded that overall the findings provide strong support for the case that food additives exacerbate hyperactive behaviors including inattention, impulsivity and hyperactivity in children at least until middle childhood. Since hyperactive behavior interferes with learning and especially the improvement of reading skills, food additives can have a negative effect on the educational development of children.
Artificial colors and preservatives like those tested in the study are found not only in sweets but in a wide variety of breakfast cereals, soft drinks and other processed foods, as well as in vitamins, toothpaste and over-the-counter medicines. The US Food and Drug Administration has responded in the past to public concerns about the safety of food additives by pointing out that because artificial color additives permitted for food use must be listed on product labels (eg, “FD&C yellow #5”), those who wish to avoid consuming they can do that. Hopefully, the recent research and finding will move the watchdog agencies like the USFDA to take stronger positions on food additives.
In the meantime, you and I can take our own stand by reading labels and not allowing our children, grandchildren or even adults to consume artificial colors and preservatives. Anything that would change the brain and the thought processes and behaviors of children cannot be good for anyone. . . whether big or small.
No wonder people find improved health, increased energy, weight loss, and even healings when they complete a 21-day Daniel Fast! It is a healthy eating experience for the whole person: body, soul and spirit!
