Oat Crust Recipe for Pies
If you enjoy making pies from scratch, then this oat crust recipe might just be for you.
This is the four ingredients you will need to make your oat crust:
1 cup of quick cooking oats
(Quick cooking oats have smaller flakes and are oats that have been cut in a way that makes them cook faster, while regular or old-fashioned oats are whole flakes that are larger in size.)
At some point in cooking, you may find that regular or old-fashioned oats take a little longer to cook, and they may have a nuttier texture to them. But quick oats can still be used just as successfully in baking. The choice is up to you. It just depends on whatever texture you would prefer to have when you cook your oats.
1 tablespoon sweet butter or margarine, melted
2 egg whites
½ cup oat bran
Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Place the oats and oat bran and combine the mixture in a medium bowl.
In another medium bowl, use a hand mixer to beat two egg whites until they become foamy and slightly thick, about 25 seconds.
Then pour the butter into the oat mixture, and toss well to combine. Now, add your egg whites and continue to mix the oats and egg whites well.
Pie Crust Plate
Lightly oil your 9-inch cake pan with butter or butter-flavored spray.
Pour the oat mixture into the pie crust and use a sheet of waxed paper to press the oats into a crust on the bottom and roughly up the sides of the pie crust.
Next, bake the oat pastry until it is lightly browned, firm and dry to the touch for about 15 minutes.
At this point, you can choose to fill the pie with any filling of your choice, be it pumpkin pie or chocolate pudding, it’s up to you. Now, put the cake in the fridge and let it cool until set.
You can also pre-bake the pie for about 7 minutes, then fill with vegetable batter like a quiche and continue baking until the quiche is set, which will take about 20 minutes.
Here’s a quick kitchen tip for storing your oats: Place them in a tightly covered container in the refrigerator. They will last up to one year.
A quick tip for cooking your oats: When you cook oats for cereal, it will depend on the texture you want to achieve. If you’re in the mood for a coarse texture, add the oats to boiling water or juice. However, if you want your oats to be creamy, add the oats to room temperature water or juice, then cook. Either way, be sure to use a heavy bottom pan and a slow, steady heat to avoid burning.
So, the next time you want something a little sweet, but still healthy and nutritious, try this oatmeal crust recipe, and you too will be pleasantly surprised. And your taste buds will probably thank you.
