School Vending Machines that are hurting our kids
One of the most critical jobs we have as parents is helping our children stay healthy. We do our best while they are at home. We pack them a bag for lunch or send them to school with lunch money and hope for the best. But children don’t always follow their parents’ advice when they’re away from home. When children are in school, their main task is to learn, and schools are responsible for creating an environment conducive to learning. So why are so many parents and school administrators effectively poisoning children and sabotaging their ability to learn? That’s exactly what school vending machines do.
#1 Sugar Rush, Sugar Crash
We’ve all heard these terms, but what do they mean? You may hear the term “sugar rush” and liken it to a euphoric feeling or feeling of increased energy. What actually happens when you eat (or drink) sugar is that your bloodstream is flooded with glucose and insulin tries to turn this extra energy into fat stores. Any burst of energy that you have associated with ingesting sugar is short-lived and is quickly followed by the “sugar crash.” Headaches, lethargy and even dizziness are common symptoms of the crash. When your body absorbs all the glucose from your sugary snack, and insulin is produced, it triggers these reactions and makes you feel, in a word, sick.
As you can imagine, sugar consumption at school can wreak havoc on a child’s learning ability. Everyone reacts differently to sugar, but mostly children are more sugar-sensitive than adults. In fact, studies have shown that children’s adrenaline levels are 10 times higher than normal for up to five hours after a test dose of sugar. Children’s learning ability deteriorates in direct proportion to the amount of sugar they ingest.
Teachers are, or should be, on board with getting rid of school vending machines that feed our kids junk. One school’s sugar ban had dramatic results. When Dr. Yvonne Sanders-Butler, the principal of Browns Mill Elementary School in Lithonia, Georgia implemented a school-wide sugar ban, she noted, “Within the first month of the ban, we noticed that inappropriate behavior dropped and students were more attentive. – task. Artificial food dyes are just one concern about processed food. How is real food processed into its packaged form? With chemicals. The more chemicals you consume, the worse your health becomes. Staying away from processed foods is a smart way to limit the number of toxins you consume.
A good rule of thumb is if you can pronounce all the ingredients in a food (and there are no numbers), it’s probably good to eat. There are over 4,000 artificial additives put into junk food, many of which are poorly tested and have not been tested in combination. We are basically guinea pigs eating whatever junk is put in front of us. Here are just a few of these toxins to avoid like the plague.
– Aspartame: Easy to say but it is basically poison. It is a sweetener in most diet soft drinks and is linked to brain tumors and memory loss. Some have reported its effects as being similar to formaldehyde poisoning.
– Saccharin: In 1977 the FDA recommended a ban on this sweetener after laboratory rats and mice developed bladder and other forms of cancer. The government’s response to the FDA’s recommendation was a warning label requirement. In 1997, the diet industry pressured the World Health Organization to remove saccharin from its list of cancer-causing chemicals, thus no more warning labels.
– Tartrazine: This yellow coloring is a coal-tar derivative used in many candies. The FDA was asked to ban it from all foods and schools that banned foods containing this chemical saw a big difference in the behavior of children.
– Red Dye #3: This coloring was actually banned in 1983 after studies showed thyroid tumors in lab rats, but the ruling was lifted by the government and this chemical is still used in high-fat, low-moisture foods like ice cream.
#3 Help Form Bad Habits
The problem with sugary snacks and sodas is that once a child starts eating and drinking them, they become addicted. Kids get used to the sugar rush and forget how awful they feel during the crash. Children do not process sugar in the same way as adults and sugar addiction can develop quite quickly. Sugar addiction can result in allergies, lethargy, headaches and high blood pressure. The habits they learn as children will carry with them into adolescence and into adulthood. Fat, unhealthy kids become fat, unhealthy adults… who in turn, raise fat, unhealthy kids. Breaking the cycle now will affect this generation and generations to come.
Much research has been done on the best ways to correct a bad habit. And that’s what school vending machines provide – bad food that facilitates bad habits in children. You don’t need a lot of psychological analysis to tell you that a child will eat the best tasting thing available to him or her. One of the main points in correcting a bad habit is to find an alternative behavior. If your child indulges in greasy chips, simply remove the potatoes from the house and replace them with a healthy, tasty alternative like banana chips. Likewise, in schools, children will quickly break their bad habit of eating junk food if there is no junk food available. Eliminating school vending machines and/or replacing them with healthy vending machines that offer organic, low-sugar, non-processed foods and beverages will enable children to form good habits and be successful students.
