ADHD Causes – Calcium, Chromium, and Selenium

Calcium

Children younger than ten years of age require 1,000 mg of calcium per day; teenagers require 1,200-1,500 mg. But don’t start giving your child more dairy products and cow’s milk. Although these are rich sources of calcium, they also contain a complex milk protein called casein. Casein is difficult for the human body to digest, and poorly digested casein forms a chain of amino acids called opioid peptides, which act like morphine on the human body. Consider using calcium supplements or green leafy vegetables instead of milk and dairy products.

Chrome

Chromium is a mineral obtained from green leafy vegetables and meats. We don’t hear much about chromium, but this mineral is actually responsible for regulating blood sugar and facilitating the brain’s absorption of glucose. This is a very important function because glucose is the main fuel of the brain. Without enough glucose in the brain, a child experiences problems such as difficulty concentrating, lethargy and irritability. Chromium’s role in blood sugar regulation also helps ensure a steady supply of glucose enters the brain.

Selene

Selenium is another trace mineral obtained from green vegetables. It is responsible for creating selenoproteins, an important antioxidant enzyme that prevents free radical damage and helps the body eliminate toxins. While selenium does not directly contribute to healthy brain function, its detoxification properties are crucial for children with ADHD, as many of them have high levels of toxins and heavy metals in their bloodstream.
