My First Patient
Ever since I was a child I wanted to become a doctor. I have often imagined the scene when I will check my first patient that day especially that moment will be very special for me. It will be that opportunity I have longed for all my life. I wanted it to be perfect just as I will wear a doctor’s white coat and sit gracefully in a nice chair, my patient will come to me. I will greet him warmly with a smile and ask him about his problem, he will tell me his symptoms. I will listen to him with patience and full concentration, than carefully I will make my diagnoses and prescribe him treatment. The patient will leave fully satisfied and impressed.
After so many years of hard work and toil that day finally came but in a way I least expected things to happen. It was the first day of my 2nd year of medical education, we heard that 2nd year is fully involved in clinical practice, but I thought that teachers will not let us treat patients on the very first day, there will only be an orientation ceremony and then we will be free. So I dressed properly and left for the hospital, when I was at the entrance gate, I realized that I left my overalls (white coat) in a hurry at home, I thought it doesn’t matter, I won’t need it today. I reached my classroom, our teacher came and gave his speech which was more like a warning that our any kind of irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated and we will have to suffer the consequences. The welcome our teacher gave us was good enough to freeze my blood in my veins, but it seems my teacher wasn’t satisfied with just that, so to my great surprise he announced that all the students were given assignments in different sections and they must report in their quarters in half an hour. So to my great disappointment I was about to see my first patient without my overalls, my perfect moment was already spoiled before it even started. But I was glad that at last I would examine a patient, that in itself would be a pleasure for me after all that I had always wanted to do. My duty was in the ophthalmology department in the refraction room at the autorefraction machine.
My seniors were there to guide me but the problem was that the room was already full of patients waiting for their turns with every passing second they were getting restless and impatient some women were talking loudly arguing with the staff that it was in a hurry so they should. be checked first because they can’t wait their turn. I was very confused and confused immediately I had to check the patients deal with the worried ladies and crying children have to guess what the patient is saying in all this noise, there was no nice chair, there was no calm and quiet atmosphere no white coat. instead there was an old stool, me the autorefractor machine and a group of anxious people. At the end of the day I was so tired that when I got home I immediately fell asleep, when I woke up after a few hours, I felt like I had spent my day in a fish market not in a hospital. I tried but could not remember who my first patient was, male or female, child or elderly, I had examined so many patients in a stressed and busy environment that I had completely forgotten. Many faces came to mind but I wasn’t sure which of them it was that I checked first.
So my perfect moment came in a very imperfect way and it passed. Well, I guess this is life things happen in unexpected ways and we have to live with all that, but I think all this makes our life worth living.
