Fishing for Kings in South Mississippi

Every year a group of large, voracious and opportunistic carnivores swarm through the waters of the Mississippi Gulf Coast. Known as Kingfish, Kings, Scomberomorus cavalla, or King Mackerel, these elegant torpedoes are one of the best game fish found in the 228 area code.

What is a King?

The King Mackerel is a large coastal pelagic fish found all along the Gulf and Atlantic coasts. They swim in large groups, maintaining warmer waters in a constant migration circle that brings them into Mississippi waters typically from April to October. Once the seawater drops below 70 degrees, they head for warmer areas, so don’t expect Mr. King to peck when it’s cold. The King has an iron gray back, silvery sides with greenish on the back, a lateral line that falls quickly after the second dorsal fin.

Average weights run between 5-60 pounds with fish around 15 pounds being the most common, larger fish are quite possible. The state convention record held by DMR is for 64 lbs. 8 oz. fish caught in 1999 by Dan Abshire Jr. The IGFA record currently recognized is for 93 lbs.

Although not as tasty as snapper, tuna and wahoo, they are still edible and a few nice sized ones can fill a freezer with delicious fillets to enjoy all summer long. It is low in fat, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, and is white and flaky when cooked.

Regs

These large mackerel are abundant in the Gulf due to strict regulation and conservation, which has raised the once-threatened stocks steadily since 1983. Kings are both state and federally regulated. The current state (and federal) limits are 2 per possession and keepers must be at least 24 inches long in a straight line from tip of muzzle to fork of tail. Be really careful when you catch a big Spanish mackerel that you don’t actually have any young Kings– which can cause you a lot of trouble. The best way to tell them apart is a juvenile king will have a grey-blue front dorsal fin, the Spanish ones will have black. Generally the royal season lasts all year, but be sure to check and make sure there have been no changes to this before you head out.

Tips and Tricks

While their smaller cousin the Spanish mackerel can be caught from the dam and along the many coastal jetties, the king prefers deeper waters. They can be found best along oil rigs, deep reefs, offshore wrecks, and choppy waters adjacent to deep passes. Generally, you want to look for deep water 50-150 feet below the hull.

They eat almost anything that fits in their mouth including all smaller fish, squid and shrimp, which makes catching them an equal opportunity. They can be well caught when trolling for walleye, cigar minnow or sardine, or fishing with artificial or real mullet. Other artificials such as spoons, feathers, jigs and large plugs also work best when in conjunction with a friend line. This can bring in a large school of these migrating silversides, which can mean an explosion of fishing excitement. The Southern Kingfish Association holds one of the most popular tournaments for this species, specializing in the good old king. Membership in this group of mackerel mavericks can lead to a great education on how to target these rustlers.

Although not impossible, fliers have a difficult time with Kings due to the size of the animals. Many Mississippi saltwater fly fishermen have caught these silver sided monsters and the current fly record stands at 27 lbs. 6.4 oz. for a 2009 catch by Doug Borries.

With a little luck and deep enough water, you can bet your own stock of Kings is just there, waiting for you.
