Weaning: From Breastfeeding To Baby’s First Solid Food
As babies approach 6 months of age, the common concern among mothers is not how to stop breastfeeding, but what to feed the baby. For 2nd or 3rd time moms, this is basically not a problem. But beginners are usually protective of their kids, so they research and ask around what the best foods are.
Now, don’t argue, I’m a first time mom too. I actually feel worse than most moms because I have two kids and I was overprotective when they were babies. So I’m also guilty of all the research and information gathering.
When you stop breastfeeding, you deprive him of a source of most of his daily nutritional needs. While it is recommended to breastfeed an infant for up to 2 years (or more), sometimes specific circumstances do not allow a breastfeeding relationship to last that long. When this happens, you can talk to your pediatrician about what formula you can use as an alternative.
A tip when introducing solid foods to babies is to space out introductions of each new food by four days. This is to give your baby time to react to the new food – in a good way (he really, really likes it) or in a bad way (he develops a rash or allergy to it).
To help you with that, here are some recommended first foods for your baby:
– Iron-enriched baby rice cereal or dry baby rice. Dry cereal should be mixed with breast milk or formula to make a runnable solution. The first feeding will take about one to two teaspoons; you can reduce the amount after a few days to allow the mixture to thicken and give your baby some texture in his mouth. This allows your baby to practice spoon feeding, which involves a different response than drinking milk from the breast or bottle.
– Vegetable puree. Carrots, parsnips, sweet potatoes, zucchini, and squash are great for pureeing. Plus, it introduces baby to the wonderful world of new flavors. Once your baby gets used to the baby rice mix, you can add this puree to the mix for extra flavor, giving him a new way to enjoy.
– Fruit purees. These can be served in a bowl with the included rubber-tipped spoon, or you can drink it as juice. Apples, pears, mangoes, papayas, or mashed bananas are some safe fruits.
