Top Five Teething Toys
My little Abigail was a calm, happy little sprite. She rarely cried, slept through the night early, and was generally a joy to be around. I told everyone I knew how amazing she was. That’s what I get for opening my big mouth! Apparently someone tipped off the tooth gods about my arrogance, and at 5 months Abigail started teething. Then, my world changed suddenly as I dealt with a drooling, sobbing, nasty bundle of misery. The only way we got through it was with baby Tylenol and some great teething toys.
- Abigail’s favorite was one of the simplest – a gel-filled ring that I kept in the fridge. Actually, I bought half a dozen of these. I quickly learned that my toddler liked to suck them too, and we lost several over the course of a month (I later found two of them under the couch, covered in dust bunnies). Fortunately, these can be found at almost any grocery store, and are usually only a few dollars.
- Massaging Teether. This one had a handle to hold, and gently massaged Abigail’s swollen gums. She had to be in the right mood for it, but sometimes it worked wonders.
- Gearing is rattling. We had an assortment of rattles and rings that offered a variety of surfaces. Some had small round clouds, others ridges, and some had smooth, solid surfaces. These come in a million beautiful shapes and sizes. We had an elephant with tufted ears, a bear with clouded feet and hands, a crackling star and a caterpillar with all possible textures and shapes. One of Abigail’s favorites, however, was a set of teething beads, mostly because it was easy for her to hold.
- Vinyl books. Although they weren’t marketed for teethers at the time, Abigail had a set of baby books that were vinyl. They were titled Baby’s Big Day, Baby’s Bedtime and Baby’s Puppy. They should be titled Baby Stops Screaming in Teething Pain. She gnawed on them incessantly. Now there are little books marketed specifically as teething books, but any of the baby books will work just fine.
- Soft toys. Although they were a little rough after being chewed, Abigail seemed to chew her soft dolls and toys a lot. They are softer on the gums than the hard plastic brace, and easier to grip with small hands. They are machine washable – which is good because they get very wet and smell gross after being chewed on all day. You can find several soft teething toys on the market now. Again we had at least half a dozen of these which was good because half of them were always in the laundry room. With a teething baby, I was lucky if the family had clean matching socks!
In addition to traditional teething toys, Abigail enjoyed teething crackers, bread crusts, growths and fingers (and once she got some teeth, I learned to keep my fingers out of her mouth!)
In the end, both Abigail and I got through teething without going crazy. Now it’s about dentist appointments, and orthodontics.
