Aspirin For Dogs – Is it Safe?
Aspirin can control pain and inflammation in dogs just as it does in humans. But did you know that more than 40,000 people die each year from aspirin-related complications? Aspirin for dogs can cause many of the same types of problems that dog owners should be aware of.
Most of the problems experienced by dogs taking aspirin are related to digestive tract infections. As the following stories show, these can be very dangerous.
My older dog, Storm, developed severe arthritis when he was older. The vet recommended that we give him low dose aspirin daily for his arthritis. Not only will this reduce his joint pain, but it will also act as an anti-inflammatory for his joint ailments.
We started giving Storm aspirin for his dog arthritis. It seemed like he was relieved and we are happy for him. He is a large dog and we give him a coated aspirin every day. Everything went smoothly for about 2 weeks. Then one day, he was suddenly very ill. It never occurred to us that the aspirin we gave his dog might be the problem.
I actually think that, because of his advanced age, a major event happened. Maybe he had a stroke or worse. By all accounts, he was down and dying. He was about 14 years old at the time. We live about an hour from the vet and he’s in such bad shape I don’t think he’ll make the trip. We know he’s had a lot of issues over the past few months and we want him to be with us and his “partners” if that’s the end…it seems to be it.
Again, it was never a consideration for us to give his dog aspirin. But after about 8 hours, his appearance and behavior started to improve. By the next day he was much better. It’s almost like a miracle. I guess it’s not his time yet.
Later, I put together a few things I saw during the week I gave him the aspirin. I’ve noticed that his poop is sometimes quite black. I don’t know, but the dark poop could mean that the aspirin caused a serious infection that caused his bowel to bleed. Blood can cause a dog’s poop to turn black or even black.
We then stopped regularly giving Storm aspirin. However, we continued and just gave him every day. We would never give the dog aspirin more than 2 days a week. If you follow this plan, the chances of aspirin causing an infection are very small. Dogs can benefit from aspirin just like humans. However, owners should be aware of the dangers of aspirin for dogs.
When taking aspirin, always keep an eye on your dog’s poop to make sure it looks normal. Stop giving your dog aspirin if there is any change in color. Also, try to only save aspirin for the days when your dog is in the most trouble or seems to be in the most pain.
