Babywearing, Not Just For Babies
Babywearing, an ancient practice in many countries is now entering “mainstream” households across the United States. Carrying options ranged from the standard backpacks and Baby Bjorns, to the more stylish and versatile Ring Slings, Mei Tais, Pouches, and more! When we think of babywearing, we envision tiny newborns tucked in the fetal position close to their Mom or Dad’s heart, safely. But, babywearing is not just for babies.
Our wonderful babies are quickly growing into curious and rambunctious toddlers. The next thing you know, they’re running away from you; touching and exploring the world around them with fervor and enthusiasm. This is an exciting time in the life of both parent and child but sometimes a little rest is in order. Here are just a few of the many benefits to “carrying” your toddler:
1. Safety first: When you put your child in a carrier, you know exactly where she is. Getting from the car, through the parking lot, and into a store suddenly becomes a safe and pleasant experience. Instead of struggling to hold your child’s hand to keep her from running away, she is close to you and safe in your arms. If she’s in a carrier, you won’t have to worry that an unsuspecting driver might not see your little dart across the parking lot. You will be able to calmly walk to the store, enjoying the moment while talking about the colors of the cars that pass you.
2. Fighting Germs: How many times has duty called yet you didn’t know how you would manage your luggage and your toddler in a germ-filled public restroom? You could wait until you get home or pull out your carrier and be “relieved” that your drive home is comfortable instead of rushed. With your hands free to get to work, and when you’re carrying your toddler, they can’t grab dirty toilet paper from the bathroom or play with the germ lock in the stall. Yes, this sounds extreme, but desperate times call for desperate measures!
3. Run the Clingies: Childhood is a confusing time in a child’s life. All day long they struggle between being a baby and being a big kid. When it all gets too much and they need to recharge, they tend to cling to us like a static cling. One of the best ways to cure the “klingies” is to wear your child for an extended period of time during the day. This extra closeness, nurturing and security will fill your child up and really encourage him to be more confident and independent.
4. Taming Tempers: Another adverse effect of this confusing time called Childhood is the dreaded Irritability. They always seem to rear their ugly heads right when you walk into the department or grocery store. Dr. Sears, in his article, “13 Ways to Encourage Toddler Good Behavior” recommends you “Use wisdom when shopping” and “Take your baby sling.” When a child feels tired or overwhelmed, they tend to have a meltdown. Even in the chaotic environment of a shopping mall, when you carry your little one, they can rest, feel safe and relaxed. This is a surefire way to tame the raging beast.
These are just a few of the many benefits of carrying an older baby. For me, the best benefit of all was when I just carried my are-you-even-thinking-of-putting-me-down-the-if-I-stop-jumping-me newborn. My two-year-old came up to me and said, “Lift up, mommy! Please!” If I wasn’t a babywearing Mom, I would never have been able to hold (on my back) and rock my “high needs” newborn while still getting some much needed cuddle time with my toddler. Yes, I wore them both- but that’s a topic for another article!
