Crying Baby – Why Do Babies Cry?

There are many reasons babies cry. When you have a crying baby, the biggest thing to keep in mind is that this is the baby’s only way to communicate. If the crying continues, it simply means that you have not yet found what he is trying to tell you. At first, your baby has no way to communicate with you other than crying. Unfortunately, this cry could be anything from “I’m hungry” to “I need a change of perspective” with a range of possibilities in between.

Most things that make a baby cry are not related to eating: They scratch themselves and pull their hair without realizing it was them. They stagger into a corner and get stuck. They are tired of lying on their back or side. They are cold or hot. They were startled by a loud noise. And the list goes on…

The first three months of life is usually when a baby cries the most. The lack of any other communication method is directly responsible for this. During this time, many new mothers learn to recognize subtle differences in the sounds of the cries, helping them to respond more quickly to the needs of the baby. Hunger is the biggest reason most people assume a baby is crying. Babies usually do not need to feed every time they cry, although there are some babies who expect to feed almost constantly. An easy way to check if your baby is hungry is to gently rub the side of your finger on the baby’s cheek. If hunger is the reason for the cry, the baby will usually shake its head towards your finger with its mouth open.

Often a baby will not get all the air out of their stomach when they burp right after a meal. When this happens, it may take a while before they react and need to burp again. When the problem is gas, the baby will usually burp quickly after you pick them up. If your baby tends to spit up after eating, try to recognize any movements that “bounce” the baby’s stomach. Try rocking your baby gently instead of jumping. Both movements are equally soothing and the shaking does not cause an upset stomach. A baby will generally cry quickly when they have a dirty diaper. For a newborn, this could be as often as once an hour depending on how often they eat. If your baby has eaten recently, this could be an indication that it’s time to check his pants.

Many times, a new baby is cared for by family members. While each of them have good intentions and simply want to meet the newest addition to the family, too much of a good thing is not always a good thing. Newborns spend most of their day sleeping. This will decrease as they get older, but their sleep requirements are still a surprisingly high number of hours. If your baby hasn’t slept in the last hour or so, the crying could simply be because they are tired.

With as much sleep as they get, it’s hard to believe that a baby would be bored, but a lack of stimulation is as detrimental to their development as a lack of food is to their health. Babies will spend most of their time awake trying to discover the world around them. You are a big part of that world and should make time to visit them every time they wake up. Be careful not to distract them for too long or you will have a baby who cries because they are tired. Provide things for the baby to look at while they lie down. Rotate their position from right to left, top to bottom. Have something different each time to help keep them entertained.
